PANAMA CITY, FL New Year’s Eve
This year, Panama City is THE place to spend New Year’s
Ok, not really.
It’s rolling out the same shin-digs from previous years of yore.
Panama City Beach doesn’t have much for locals during the best of times, so really, ask yourself why New Year’s Eve should vary from that norm.
That’s not to take away from those hosting events, by any means. Pier Park offers the widely popular “Pier Park Ball Drop” too much success, while numerous bars, clubs and restaurants offer up smaller soiree’s.
Pier Park’s schedule kicks off Saturday around 5:30pm and is billed as a Family Celebration. I say that with some hesitation, since the crowds begin to gather relatively early and if you’re anything like me (loves a good time but hates a crowd) and wrangling a toddler at any given time- the idea of the Family event is appealing, but more hassle than heartwarming.
Granted, that’s my two cents and it goes without saying that most families tend to be a more gifted in the patience arena. I’m not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination… and envy those who handle crowds, toddlers and county events with seemingly natural grace.
Anyhoo, 5:30pm Sat- All Families A-Go.
From then on you can expect a live performance from The Barry Fish Band, face painting, stilt walkers, costumed characters and more. About 8pm, the family event loosely concludes with the beach ball drop, featuring more than 7,000 inflated beach balls. I can literally sense my two-year-old shivering with a frantic need to dart smack into the multicolored fray. Kid has zero fear.
On the more adult-ish side, the Countdown Celebration begins at 8:45 p.m. with special performances from Almost There, Ryan Star and Sarah Darlin.
Personally, I have no clue who they are but that’s who Panama City rolls. I’m sure there’s a gazzilion folks residing in Bay County, who are literally besides themselves with mounting, musical anticipation and I think that’s great. It’s just that I’m cozy with another style of sound and it doesn’t play well with others.
Anyway.. after that, ball drops, people drink, load up in cars seeking another venue, or for some- the fastest route home. Either way, you’re going to end up at a check-point around No Name Lounge. For those traveling back across the bridge, just don’t be dumb Sparky.
As for New Year’s Resolutions… I usually shy away from them, since I prefer to keep plugging along through out the year which ensures any feelings of failing will be handled in small, manageable increments however, this year I’m going to attempt them. Stay tuned.
